The Big Number Natter is back for National Numeracy Day 2023!

11 Apr 2023

Love it or loathe it, everyone has something to say about maths.

Following the success of last year’s campaign, The Big Number Natter is back, and this year it’s set to be even bigger!

National Numeracy Day takes place on 17 May and throughout the entire month, The Big Number Natter will see people across the UK taking a first step to improving numeracy by talking about numbers and how they make them feel.

The UK’s only nationwide conversation about numbers

The aim of The Big Number Natter is to inspire adults to open up about their feelings towards numbers, challenging stereotypes and showing how numbers are needed in everyday life.

Why?

  • Because half of the UK’s working-age adults have the numeracy levels of a primary school child.
  • Millions of children leave school lacking number confidence. 30% of school leavers (18-24s) feel anxious about using maths and numbers and they are the most maths-anxious adult group in the UK.
  • Low numeracy makes people vulnerable to debt, unemployment, poor health and fraud, all of which have been exacerbated by the cost-of-living crisis.

How do you feel about numbers?

Whether it’s a story about school lessons, tips for bagging the best supermarket bargains, making calculations in your career or helping kids with homework, we all have a tale or two to tell about everyday maths.

Lots of people feel worried about numbers and maths, often having had a bad experience at school. And while not being able to read holds some stigma, it’s not uncommon to hear people declare: ‘I don’t do maths, but it doesn’t matter.’

However, opening up about our feelings is a great first step towards positive change. And talking about the way we feel about numbers is no different. Often, we find out others feel just the same as we do!

We'd love to hear your number tips and tricks, the story behind your lucky number, or how you use numbers at work.

Katya Jones, World Champion Dancer, Strictly Come Dancing pro and National Numeracy Ambassador, said: “I do not have a maths degree, but I know that numbers play a big part in all of our lives. Whether you’re looking for a bargain at the shops, trying to understand a household bill or even choreographing a dance routine. So I’d love to show that anyone can improve their numeracy confidence. Big Number Natter is a great way to open up about how we really feel about everyday maths and take that first step.”
