Numeracy Champions

Our vision is that one day every organisation in the UK will have at least one trained Numeracy Champion.

Our growing network of Numeracy Champions support colleagues, customers and communities to feel better about maths, and get started with improving their numeracy - helping people to get on at work, support their children and manage their money.

What is a Numeracy Champion?

We offer two types of CPD-accredited Numeracy Champions training designed to help organisations support people to improve their confidence with numbers.

Numeracy Champions don't teach maths, but instead offer support to others to overcome barriers and anxieties about numbers and data.

Anyone with an interest in supporting others to feel more confident with numbers can train to be a Numeracy Champion – you just need to already have a group of adults to support.

Numeracy Champions - Supporting Adults

If you, or a member of your team is looking to support colleagues (including staff in secondary schools), learners, customers, or adults in the community to get started with improving their numeracy, then this is the training course for you. It is delivered online in 2 two-hour sessions.

In this training, you will learn how to lead a ‘Time to Talk Numbers’ conversation to get adults thinking about the importance of numeracy, and also how to direct adults to the National Numeracy Challenge learning platform. There is also the option to learn how to deliver ‘Confidence with Numbers’ workshops to adults.

National Numeracy is funded to train Numeracy Champions in many areas of the UK at no cost to the organisation or individual themselves.

Get in touch, explaining your role, organisation, location, & the training you’re interested in and we will let you know the options that are available.

Numeracy Champions - Supporting Families

If you work in a primary school and would like to support teachers, school staff, parents or carers to help children feel good about maths, then this is the right training for you (if you work in a secondary school, please see the ‘Supporting Adults’ programme above). It is delivered online in 2 two-hour sessions.

In this training, you will learn about our Top Tips to support children’s numeracy, our Family Maths Toolkit resources, and how to direct adults to the National Numeracy Challenge learning platform. There is also the option to learn how to deliver ‘Help Your Child Love Maths!’ workshops to parents & carers.

'Numeracy Champions in the Workplace' project report

National Numeracy was delighted to gain support from Ufi VocTech Trust in late 2021, to increase the scale and impact of the Numeracy Champions programme. The aims were to:

  • Establish a network of 500 Numeracy Champions in workplaces across the UK
  • Increase the impact of Numeracy Champions
  • Plan how to sustainably scale the programme beyond the end of the project

And it was a great success! Read all about the project, its results, and our learnings and plans to expand the network and its impact through 2024 and beyond, in this report.
