Deborah Meaden and Bobby Seagull support National Numeracy at ICAP Charity Day

6 Dec 2018

On Wednesday 5th December 2018, National Numeracy was joined by celebrity ambassador Bobby Seagull and Dragons’ Den businesswoman Deborah Meaden at ICAP Charity Day in London.

ICAP, part of TP ICAP, the world’s largest international interdealer broker, was a lead supporter of National Numeracy Day 2018 and invited National Numeracy to take part in this year’s Charity Day. The theme was “together we give 100%” as all the commissions and revenues ICAP generates during the day is donated.

Rebecca Shelley, Group Corporate Affairs Director, TP ICAP said, “ICAP Charity Day is now in its 26th year and we’re delighted to be supporting 17 very deserving charitable organisations in the UK this year, National Numeracy being one of those.”

Since its launch in December 1993, ICAP Charity Day has raised almost £140 million for charitable causes. Scores of celebrities attend in support of their chosen charities and get on the phones to close deals. This year, ICAP welcomed a host of famous faces including Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Love Island winner Dani Dyer, actors Chiwetel Ejiofor CBE, Adrian Lester, Charlie Murphy, Gemma Arterton, and sportspeople Annabel Croft and Monty Panesar. Some of the other 16 charities in attendance were National Numeracy’s sister charity the National Literacy Trust, Body & Soul, St Giles Trust and the Silver Line.

Surrounded by ICAP employees in fancy dress from dinosaurs to Pink Ladies, National Numeracy set up two challenges, a mental maths test and a physical challenge.

“Can you beat Bobby?” encouraged ICAP employees and celebrities to see if they could beat Bobby Seagull’s score of 40 correct quickfire maths questions in two minutes. Deborah Meaden put her skills to the test and John, ICAP employee, came impressively close to Bobby’s score with 33.

The rowing contest gave participants 30 seconds to row as many metres as they could. The offices were buzzing with light-hearted competition and employees raced to beat their colleagues on the rowing machines. Actor Jenny Agutter had a go, rowing an impressive 131 metres in 30 seconds and earning her place on the leaderboard.

National Numeracy brought numeracy to the fore on the day through conversation with employees and celebrities about their relationship to maths and numbers.
