The Strictly professional dancer is passionate about making things in life simple, not scary, and maths is one of them. On 19 May she is going to show us all how you can have fun getting active with numbers with a special National Numeracy Day Dance video.
Katya says: “I am not a mathematician, but I am curious about numbers. If you are curious, you can go on a journey to learn something new. I use numbers when I choreograph and dance, but just like everyone else I also need them in my everyday life.
“I have always looked at numbers as an exciting game, to me they are magical and playful! It is so important to foster this positive mindset with our children! I believe it will spark bigger opportunities for them if they go out there - into the big, wide world - with confidence.
“I am delighted to be an ambassador for National Numeracy and can’t wait to bring some sparkle and help everyone see how welcoming and rewarding numbers can be!"
Sam Sims, Chief Executive of National Numeracy, the independent charity responsible for National Numeracy Day, says: “We are thrilled that Katya has agreed to become a National Numeracy Ambassador. Her positivity about numbers is inspirational. She captures the essence of what you need to get on with numbers – a positive mindset, a belief in the value of numeracy in all aspects of life and the enthusiasm to give it a go.”
Katya joins our fantastic celebrity Ambassadors, Rachel Riley, Martin Lewis and Bobby Seagull, who all freely give their time and energy to help the adults and children in the UK get on with numbers so they can get on in life. Watch this space for more celebrity announcements this week!
We’ll keep the details of Katya’s dance under wraps for now, but you can join Katya, Bobby and some of our other celebrities for a National Numeracy Day sneak peek live event on Wednesday 21 April at 6pm on our website or tune in to National Numeracy’s Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or Linkedin channels.
National Numeracy Day 2021, with founding supporter KPMG, aims to empower adults and children to improve their confidence and competence with numbers in three key areas of their lives: for work, supporting children, managing money.
On 19 May, you can join live events, use loads of free resources in our hubs and join in fun with Katya and other celebrities, all while improving your numeracy skills and confidence. Pop date in in your diaries now.
However, you don’t have to wait until 19 May to get started on building your number confidence and skills – you can have a go right now by trying the National Numeracy Challenge – it only takes 10 minutes to get started.
