Sam Sims, Chief Executive of National Numeracy says: “National Numeracy Day 2021 is all about empowering people to improve their number confidence and skills so they feel ready use numbers in all aspects of their everyday lives. Today we’re announcing a fantastic line-up of entertaining and educational events to help people achieve these goals.
“We’re also launching our School Numbers Heroes competition. This exciting initiative is encouraging primary school children to use their imagination and get creative with numbers. Let’s get them thinking positively about numbers, with a little help from Bobby!”
School Number Heroes competition
When you grow up, how will you use numbers in your life? That’s what we want children to create a picture of for our competition. Maybe they would love to become a vet, teacher, engineer or footballer? Or dream of spending their days dancing, baking or saving the planet?
To take part in our School Number Heroes competition, we’d love primary-school aged children to create a picture of themselves doing their dream job or hobby and tell us how it uses numbers. To enter, you must be aged between 4 and 12 and be a UK resident.
One winner and five runners up will be selected by National Numeracy staff and our celebrity Ambassador Bobby Seagull, the maths teacher and TV personality, soon to appear on Channel 4’s new quiz show, The Answer Trap.
“Numbers play a part in every job or hobby you can think of,” said Bobby Seagull. “So whatever the children would like to do when they grow up, they can definitely be a Number Hero! I can’t wait to see what wonderful ideas they come up with!”
The winner will receive a £50 gift voucher and certificate, and a £1,000 Number Heroes pack for their chosen primary school containing games, books and other resources to help the whole school community get confident with numbers, provided by National Numeracy and National Numeracy Day Founding Supporter KPMG. The winner’s school will also have a digital assembly by Bobby! The runners up will each receive a £20 gift voucher and certificate.
The closing date for entering your picture is 3pm on Friday 2 June, 2021. Please visit our School Number Heroes competition web page for details of how to submit your picture and the full terms and conditions of the competition. We can’t wait to see your creative and colourful entries!
