A new skill for a new year

1 Jan 2024

Are you looking for a New Year’s resolution that you can do in just 10 minutes a day, will help you every day at home and at work – and is totally free?

A graphic saying "New Year, new you!" with a list of slider options: "Delete takeaway app", "Get some exercise", and "Learn a new skill". "Learn a new skill" is switched to 'on'.

Over January – and throughout the year – you can use our free habit trackers to build your skills and confidence with numbers.

You might think you’re not a “maths person”, but we all use maths every day; whether we’re doing our shopping, planning a trip, cooking dinner or helping children with homework.

You can also build your skills for free on the National Numeracy Challenge.

It’s an easy-to-use online tool, that you can use in your own time and at your own pace, on mobile, tablet or computer.

It’s all about the maths you use in daily life, rather than classroom maths, to help us build confidence with the kind of numeracy we all use all the time.

The Challenge also adapts to your level of maths ability as you go – and it will show you how to solve any questions you can’t work out, with animations and explanations to help you next time.

In addition, when signing up to the National Numeracy Challenge, you also get free access to exclusive financial education app, Nudge.

With over 500,000 people now signed up, the National Numeracy Challenge is a great way to improve your numeracy skills and confidence in your own time and at your own pace so you can get on with numbers at work, home and in life.

'I found the concept of the National Numeracy Challenge amazing. I liked it that you were not being timed or put under pressure, which eased the tension and focused the mind more on solving the problem, rather than feeling like you are in a race as I did when I was at school. It’s important to feel confident with numbers. One should never say they are too old or busy to learn or relearn. It’s a lifelong journey.' – Alma, Curriculum and Delivery manager, London
